Ephesians 1:1-3
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.
Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians is unique. He wrote the majority of his letters to correct problems in the churches. This letter is more theological in nature than it is corrective. Paul spends the first three chapters explaining what the Lord has done for us, the church. The last three chapters address how we should live as Christians. Although the first three chapters tell us what God has done for us, they also tell us of our position in Christ, that we are seated together with Him. In chapters four and five, Paul instructs us how to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord in light of all He has done for us. The final chapter exhorts us to stand against the devil and his evil attempts to destroy the work of God in our lives. It is important to keep in mind that Paul wrote this magnificent epistle while imprisoned, and even in such an inauspicious condition, he was full of joy because he was living out every word he penned.
Paul begins this letter with an abbreviated salutation. He identifies himself as the author, in typical form, and then names the Ephesian Christians as the recipients. Even though he spent about three years there, he doesn’t mention any names or give any personal greetings, which was unusual. Nevertheless, he gives his normal introductory prayer/blessing wishing them grace and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Then he praises God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for blessing us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Every blessing Jesus inherited is yours, but these are heavenly blessings. Paul was not looking for earthly blessings as he sat in his prison cell writing this letter. He was content with every spiritual blessing the Lord had for him. The blessings he referred to are not things we will only receive when we get to heaven. Many of these blessings we already possess. As Christians, we often limit ourselves from receiving all the Lord has for us. We focus only on earthly, temporal blessings, but God has so much more for you. He has given you EVERY spiritual blessing! Those gifts are heavenly, but He has given them to you to enjoy and use now. Don’t limit yourself from receiving the blessings the Lord wants to impart to you. By faith, believe He has marvelous plans for you now and in the future. Ask the Lord to show you every blessing He has for you, and as you read through this glorious letter to the Ephesian believers, take note of every spiritual blessing God has bestowed upon you in Christ.
